Gerald Clark started his career as front-man for Delta Blue, a blues outfit that toured extensively both nationally and internationally between 1999 and 2005. With his solo career launched in 2005, he continued to garner an active fan base with his Afrikaans album Sweepslag which received a SAMA nomination for Best Alternative Afrikaans Album as well as three Tempo and two Vonk nominations respectively.
The intervening years saw collaborations with the likes of Stefan Dixon, Luna Paige and Albert Frost, as well as industry greats like Bok van Blerk, Gian Groen, Van Coke Cartel, Dan Patlansky and Schalk Joubert. His professional relationship with Theo Crous (Springbok Nude Girls, producer and guitarist) gave him the opportunity to perform the song “As The Crow Flies” for the Volkswagen Amarok TV ad campaign.
In 2012, Gerald Clark underwent surgery to remove a growth that had been obstructing his vocal cords, effectively leaving him with only two-thirds of his full vocal ability for the preceding two years. The veteran of the SA blues scene received the prognosis just as he was preparing to launch his new album, Black Water, alongside a music video of the title track. Gerald fully recovered from his operation and went on to launch the album to a very eager public.
The Black Water music video (brainchild of Marius Joubert and Daneille Jacobs from Yesterfang Puppetry & Animation) won the number one spot on the MK Top Ten, sparking industry-wide interest and continued online attention from fans worldwide.
A 2013 tour in the Czech Republic saw Clark perform to sold-out venues and elicit quite a few standing ovations.
Another song from the Black Water album, “Feel So Good…Can’t Keep From Crying”, was chosen as an opening track for Supersport’s mountain bike race program in April 2013. The producers also chose to end each program with two tracks from Gerald Clark’s last album Follow The River.
Audiences can look forward to a brand new direction that will see this versatile artist venture into previously uncharted waters and truly challenge himself and his repertoire. A mature and contemporary take on his established style, these new tracks are set to haunting melodies that serve to support the varied nuances of Clark’s distinctive voice.
